Aledjo – a village close to the border of Togo

Yesterday was a real BIG day. WE’ve made a village happy. The village made us happy!
Very emotional and touching.

Here is the story.

Yesterday morning we met Salifou at Parakou. Salifou is Beninois, he was recommended to us by Xeni (as we wrote before). Together with him we went to Aledjo, his home village where about 1000 women founded a youth centre. It seemed that all of them were waiting there for us with the kids.

They knew we would come, because Salifou told them. They were so pleased and overwhelmed when they saw the lapops and the mobiles – it is really hard to find words for it. After handing all the stuff to them we had to go to the main hall where all of them were waiting. BTW this youth center is almost the only building with electricity in the village.

Hier a été une jounrée vraiment EXTRAORDINAIRE. Nous avons rendu un village heureux. Le village nous a rendus heureux!

Hier matin nous avons rencontré Salifou à Parakou. Salifou est Beninois, il nous a été recommandé par Xeni (comme nous l’avons déjà signalé dans un posting antérieur). Avec lui nous sommes allés à Aledjo, son village natal où près de 1000 femmes ont fondé un centre de jeunes. Il semble que tous nous aient attendus avec leurs enfants.

Ils savaient que nous viendrions parce que Salifou le leur a dit. Ils étaient si heureux de voir les laptops et les portables – cela est vraiment difficile à décrire. Après leur avoir donné tout ce matériel nous sommes allés dans la grande salle où tous attendaient.  Ce centre de jeunes est presque le seul bâtiment où il y a de l’électricité dans le village.

in the bus to parakou

They are in the bus to parakou know, which is more in the north and they are hoping the communication wont be so difficult. Today I talked to Ulrike via Skype. Their credit cards don’t work their anymore, so I have to send them money. I’m happy that I can help them. So tomorrow I’ll make my first money transfer via Western Union Bank, hope everything gets well. Alexander wrote me a sms they will meet salifou. I also got an email from Alexander describing his feelings and experiences the last days, which I’ll translate later. They also told me, they got the impression they do it really right how they do/did it. So the mission WEbenin 2009 is going on very well.

Maintenant ils sont dans le bus pour Parakou, plus dans le nord, et ils expèrent que la communication ne sera plus aussi difficile. Aujourd’hui j’ai parlé à Ulrike via Skype. Leur cartes de crédit ne fonctionnen plus à cet endroit, de sorte que je dois leur envoyer de l’argent. Je suis heureuse de pouvoir les aider. Demain je ferai mon premier transfert d’argent par la Western Union Bank, j’espère que tout ira bien. Alexander m’a écrit dans une sms qu’ils vont rencontrer salifou. J’ai aussi reçu un mèle d’Alexander décrivant ses sentiments et expériences ces derniers jours, et je le traduirai plus tard. Ils m’ont aussi dit qu’ils avaient l’impression que leur action était fructueuese. De sorte que la mission WEbenin 2009 est un succès jusqu’à présent.
